What We Collect
dotio uses a self-hosted analytics service to collect anonymous usage data to help improve the app. This includes:
- A randomly generated anonymous identifier (not linked to your identity)
- Puzzle progress (completion counts by difficulty, streaks, badges earned)
- Puzzle completion times
- App settings preferences
- Platform (iOS or Android) and app version
- Session information (puzzles completed per session, session duration)
Leaderboards & Social Features
dotio includes optional leaderboard and social features that involve sharing some data with other players:
- Daily leaderboard: When you complete a daily puzzle, your completion time is submitted to a global leaderboard. You are identified by a randomly generated anonymous name (e.g. "Fuzzy Otter"). No personal information is displayed.
- Friend groups: You may optionally create or join a friend group. If you do, you can set a nickname and emoji that are visible to other members of your group. Your daily completion times are also shared with members of your group. This data is only visible within your group and is not shared publicly or with other groups.
- Percentile rankings: Your completion times are used to calculate how you rank relative to other players. These rankings are anonymous.
What We Don't Collect
We do not collect personally identifiable information. We do not collect your email address, IP address, device identifier, or any data that could identify you personally. If you choose to set a nickname for friend groups, this is stored on our server but is only visible to members of your group.
How Data Is Stored
Anonymous usage data is sent to our self-hosted analytics service. No third-party analytics providers have access to your data. All puzzle progress and settings are also stored locally on your device.
Progress Sync & Backup
On iOS, your puzzle progress can sync between your devices through Apple's iCloud, and on Android it can be included in your Google account backup. In both cases the data goes to your own Apple or Google account, not to us. We have no access to it, and you can manage or disable it through your device's iCloud or backup settings.
How Long We Keep Data
We keep anonymous data only for as long as the feature it supports needs it:
- Daily puzzle times: kept indefinitely. These power the daily leaderboards, streaks, personal bests and past results, so deleting them would erase your history.
- Session and usage events: deleted automatically after 90 days.
- Technical request logs: deleted automatically after 7 days.
- Nickname and emoji: kept until you change them or leave your friend group.
- Data on your device: kept until you delete the app or use Reset User Data in Settings.
No Advertising
We do not use advertising, and we do not share any data with third parties for marketing purposes.
